Fans have finally gotten a serious glimpse into the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the oil rig mission looks very familiar.
The explosive official reveal trailer for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has finally been released, increasing the hype surrounding the reboot title quite significantly. While exact details concerning the title prior to this trailer were primarily down to speculation, fans are now finally able to get a grasp of what to expect from the campaign.
The reveal trailer for Modern Warfare 2 showcased many important set pieces and basic plot elements for the game's story, with many fans noting significant similarities to the original trilogy. From what can be inferred from the trailer, as well as the Summer Game Fest footage, it appears that a blend of the best parts from both the original Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 have been employed for the upcoming title.
Considering the positive reception of 2019's Modern Warfare, it is fair to say that news of a sequel has long been anticipated and met with joy by many fans of the franchise. Thankfully, fans have already been provided with a release date for the game, with the recent reveal trailer for Modern Warfare 2 also giving a more intimate insight as to some of the finer details regarding the title.
It has been suggested that Modern Warfare 2 is set to run on a brand-new game engine, with it is being safe to assume that it will take inspiration from the same visceral IW engine that was used in 2019's Modern Warfare, with a focus on sharp fidelity and accurate sound design. Modern Warfare 2's campaign will predictably build upon that of its predecessor, with Captain Price and Gaz reprising their roles from 2019's Modern Warfare. It is confirmed that MW2's campaign will largely concern the elite Task Force 141, with iconic characters Soap and Ghost making their reboot campaign debuts.
One of the most memorable missions within the original Modern Warfare 2 campaign was the mission titled "The Only Easy Day… Was Yesterday." The mission saw players take control of Gary "Roach" Sanderson of the elite Task Force 141, partaking in a covert storming of a Russian oil rig that is being used as a SAM missile defense site.
The oil rig is an offshore defense for an imposing gulag which is imprisoning the iconic Captain Price, with Task Force 141 aiming to poke a hole in the prison's defenses. The group stealthily take out guards and navigate intense hostage situations before "going loud," with an intense shootout eventually seeing allied forces take full control of the offshore rig.
As seen in detail within the official Modern Warfare 2 campaign footage that was revealed at Summer Game Fest, the upcoming story will feature its own take on an oil rig infiltration. The mission is set to be called "Dark Water," and is predictably similar to its original counterpart.
Within the new mission, the oil rig is situated in the Gulf of Mexico, and is believed to be carrying a potentially devastating weapon. The reasoning behind the infiltration is the most overt difference between the two levels, with the geographical location also being different. Still maintaining the initial stealth-based approach, players will control the iconic John "Soap" MacTavish alongside the reimagined Task Force 141, again leading to an all out firefight.
The mission then seemingly transitions to the pursuit and boarding of a cargo ship, which appears to hold the controls for the ominous weapon. While an overall shorter sequence, the oil rig section is still full of the visceral set-pieces and tense shootouts as the original oil rig mission, while possessing a new flare and plot direction befitting of the new reboot title.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on October 28.
