If you didn’t read WV News’ story on the “100 deadliest days,” we encourage you to turn back and do so.
And make sure, if you have any teenage drivers in your family, to share it with them.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is when traffic fatalities are historically higher for teenage drivers.
“The summer months are the riskiest for inexperienced teen drivers because they typically have more unstructured time behind the wheel and there are more drivers on the road,” says Theresa Podguski, director of legislative affairs for AAA East Central, which covers Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. “Although the facts are tragic, they present an opportunity to focus on and discuss what can be done to improve the safety of teenagers on the road.”
Here are some numbers from AAA to share with your teen and keep in mind:
— New teen drivers ages 16-17 are three times more likely than adults to be involved in a deadly crash.
— Most of these accidents involve either speeding or nighttime driving, or both. Thirty-six percent of all motor vehicle fatalities involving teen drivers occur between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Twenty-nine percent are related to speed.
Parents and guardians need to realize the heightened periods of danger for young drivers, and young drivers need to realize and respect the concern over these more dangerous times.
Parents should limit their teens’ driving during this time period. There need to be discussions about safe driving practices, especially avoiding texting or having too many people in the vehicle.
But while some of the burden falls on youths and their parents, it also falls on all drivers to be cognizant of the increased dangers that come with summertime driving.
There’s more traffic. There’s more travel with more people in your vehicle, such as on vacation or a day trip to the pool. We aren’t concerned with poor road conditions, so the tendency is to drive faster in good weather than, say, on a snowy day.
It’s easier to become distracted; add in our fixation on our mobile devices, and the mixture can prove deadly.
Summer can be a great time to spend with friends and family, enjoying the great weather and West Virginia’s many wondrous outdoor activities.
Let’s all focus on making this summer the safest it can be so our meetings will happen poolside, not graveside.
