BATON ROUGE – LSU has named Roy Haggerty, currently dean of the College of Science and Professor of Environmental Geology at Oregon State University, as the next executive vice president and provost. Haggerty will begin at LSU on Aug. 1, pending approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors.

A distinguished scholar and academic leader, Dr. Haggerty’s record aligns with our Scholarship First agenda focused on the areas of agriculture, biotechnology, coast, defense and energy,” said William F. Tate IV, LSU President. “Moreover, he and I share an intellectual commitment to advance our strategic planning in a more expansive fashion to include the totality of our academic community. The interdependent nature of a scholarly community is top of mind for him. I am excited to have a scholar of his standing serve as our chief academic officer.”
The executive vice president and provost reports directly to the LSU president, who serves as the chief executive officer of the flagship institution, as well as the statewide system. The executive vice president and provost serves as the chief operating and chief academic officer for LSU’s flagship campus in Baton Rouge, the chief academic officer for all LSU campuses across the state and the chief academic advisor to the president.
The provost coordinates and consults with all chief academic officers throughout the LSU enterprise to advance the university’s overall academic programs statewide. Other responsibilities include the articulation of an academic vision, leadership in academic strategic planning, and the development and administration of academic budgets, among others.
LSU conducted a national search for executive vice president and provost and invited four candidates to campus for interviews and open forums with students, faculty and staff. LSU Boyd Professor of Chemistry Graça Vicente chaired the search committee.
Haggerty is currently the dean of the College of Science and Professor of Environmental Geology at Oregon State University. He has also served as interim dean of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and as associate vice president of research at OSU.
Haggerty has been dean since 2017, and during his tenure, research funding has grown by 50 percent, and online enrollment for the college by 100 percent. Under his leadership, the college implemented a diversity action plan. He co-founded a university-wide student mentoring program, increasing retention by 7.9 percent among participants, and a statewide COVID testing program reaching 80,000 people. He is a trustee at Oregon’s science museum, OMSI. An elected fellow of Geological Society of America, he has led research projects totaling $9 million and published 75 peer-reviewed articles, mostly in the area of hydrology.
Haggerty received a Ph.D. and M.S. in hydrogeology from Stanford University and a B.Sc. with first class honors from the University of Alberta.
